Materials Needed:

How to Make a Measuring Stickiness Device

  • Simple balance made from a plastic glass or quart jar approximately 12 in. tall
  • One-hole paper punch
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Tape
  • String/yarn
  • Two 6 oz. plastic cups
  • Testing surfaces made of 4 inch squares of paper, aluminum foil, and plastic wrap; secure with tape to the work surface (desk or table)
  • Household "glues": for example, honey, white corn syrup, peanut butter, jelly, molasses, paste made from flour and water
  • Plastic spoons and/or knifes
  • Pennies to be used as measuring units
  • Sandwich cookies (two wafers with cream filling between) for opening demonstration
  • Access to the Internet to view information on cutting-edge research on adhesives; access to the Internet for students, if enrichment activities are pursued
