The Akron Global Polymer Academy is pleased to present Brett Hughes as the
Polymer Teacher of the Month for September 2008.
Brett received his bachelor of science degree in Elementary Education from Malone College, in Canton, Ohio. He began his teaching career as a substitute music teacher in the Louisville, Ohio school district. He currently teaches 6th grade science and social studies at Schreiber Elementary School in Canton, Ohio. While attending the AGPA Summer Institute in 2007, Brett, a professional magician, discovered that his magic talents could easily be put to good use in teaching his own science students. Brett now uses his magic to spark his students' interest in science. By using magic in his class, Brett allows his students to discover the many polymers that they use in everyday life. He allows his students to discover science, reach their own conclusions, gain more knowledge, and have fun in the process. Teacher participants at the AGPA 2008 Summer Institute were also able to see Brett perform his magic science lesson, "Don't Spill The Super Duper Invisible Glue", when he was invited as a guest lecturer.
When Brett isn't teaching or performing his magic, he enjoys attending his children's performances in local theater. Brett serves as a youth minister at his church and has taken instruction to receive the highest rank of Ordained Bishop. In addition to dreams of taking his magic science show on the road, he would like to one day be a traveling science teacher in his school system, so that many students will have the opportunity to learn science in a magical way!
